Timing: After the Drop, Before the Freeze

The fall cleaning has a window: after the oaks and maples finish dropping (usually late November into December in Bethesda) but before sustained freezing weather. Clean too early and the late droppers refill the gutters. Clean too late and you are working around ice — and the gutters spend winter full, which is exactly what causes ice and overflow damage. When in doubt, late November is the sweet spot.

The Checklist

1. Scoop every gutter. All of it — the matted leaves, the decomposed sludge at the bottom, the debris packed into corners and behind hangers. 2. Flush every run. Water reveals what scooping hides: low spots where water pools, pitch problems, hidden blockages. 3. Clear every downspout. Disconnect, clear, and flush each one — elbows and top outlets are where clogs live. 4. Check hangers and seams. Tighten or replace loose hangers, reseal dripping seams. Winter ice is heavy; weak hangers fail under it. 5. Check the fascia. Soft or rotted wood behind the gutter needs fixing before winter moisture makes it worse. 6. Confirm drainage. Every downspout should discharge well away from the foundation — frozen discharge near walkways becomes an ice rink. 7. Clear the valleys. Roof valleys full of leaves will wash straight into your clean gutters with the first winter rain. 8. Haul it all away. Bagged and gone, walkways rinsed.

Why Fall Is the Big One

Spring cleaning handles debris. Fall cleaning prevents damage. Gutters that go into winter full of wet leaves become gutters full of ice — and ice is heavy, expansive, and destructive. It pries gutters off fascia, snaps hangers, splits seams, and creates the dams that push water under shingles. A thorough fall cleaning is the single highest-value gutter service of the year. Read our ice dam guide for what happens when winter finds full gutters.

Do Not Forget the Downspout Exits

The most skipped step: checking where downspouts discharge. Extensions get knocked loose by mowers, splash blocks shift, and grading settles. Walk every downspout exit and confirm water still lands well away from the house — and not across a walkway that will freeze. Our drainage solutions fix the ones that do not.

Put It on Autopilot

The fall cleaning is the one nobody should have to remember — and yet every November our phones ring off the hook with people who forgot. Our maintenance plan members never call in a panic: their fall visit is already scheduled, before the rush, every year.

Frequently Asked Questions

When exactly should I schedule the fall cleaning?

Late November to early December in the Bethesda area — after the main leaf drop, before sustained freezes. Plan members get scheduled automatically in this window.

What if it already snowed? Is it too late?

Not necessarily — we clean gutters in winter when conditions are safe. But the ideal is before the first sustained freeze, so call as soon as you think of it.

Can I do the fall cleaning myself?

You can, with a sturdy ladder, a stabilizer, and comfort at height. Be honest about the ladder part — falls are the real risk. If you would rather not, that is what we are for.
